If today was my first day trying to get out of Big Tech social media, I think I would start with either Friendica, Hubzilla, or Streams (and in the future Forte, once it is has been around a bit longer). They have the best features for controlling you audience, checking in with a location if you want, and newsfeed organization.
I wouldn't even waste my time with Mastodon or any of the other Fediverse projects. If I was just wanting a Mastodon/Twitter/BlueSky/Threads experience...I would grab a Nostr Idenity and create bridges to the those other services.
That's just my two cents.
